OUTDATED Polaroid art show - an amazing success! [Aug. 17th, 2008|10:14 pm]
I am completely overwhelmed and amazed at the success of the OUTDATED Polaroid art show.

I was oblivious to the buzz that was building, due to the fact that I was teaching kids art by day and freaking out like crazy at night to get this show together. But apparently everyone was very excited about the show. Besides being posted in the 'gallery openings' section of the local weekly paper (the Chicago Reader), there were also posts on websites such as Flavorpill, Computerlove, Coolhunting and a ton of others. I've heard a rumor that there was a mention on local television, but I don't know anything about that.

I stayed up all night before the event working to get everything together, just hoping that everything could look great in time for the doors to open. When 7pm came around, the doors came open and the crowd showed up immediately. Some people had been waiting outside for an hour.

The gallery stayed packed all evening. I'm surprised that anyone had room to actually look at any of the photographs on display.

I'm in the middle of uploading photographs now: http://www.flickr.com/photos/rikgarrett/sets/72157606792184306/
Check out this link regularly (or add me on Flickr if you have an account) to see some of the other images that get uploaded.

Also, a video:

A local fashion website has this little feature: http://www.themidwasteland.com/blog/outdated-polaroid-art-show

Half Acre beer was kind enough to donate a keg of their delicious beer. Unfortunately I think the keg lasted just over two and a half hours.

My brain is still reeling from the entire thing. I'm so proud of my little project and the amazing things that have come of it.

Some people I would like to thank:

Helene, Meghan and Sara for helping me set up the show
Half Acre beer for sponsoring us with tasty drinks
Country Club Chicago
the Chicago Reader and all the other media that helped to publicize the event
everyone who came out to the show and made it an amazing event
and every single person who submitted work to the show! - thank you so much! You are all the reason why this was such a terrific exhibition!

I've already had enough interest to warrant considering doing this again. I'm thinking of possibly arranging a multi-city exhibition in the future. If you know of any gallery spaces that may be suitable then please let me know. And if you would like to participate, stock up on film now as it won't be around much longer.

OUTDATED Polaroid art show tonight [Aug. 16th, 2008|03:59 pm]
Maybe you've heard about this show in this week's Chicago Reader. Or Flavorpill. Or some other places.

But if not, I wanted to tell everyone here about the gallery show of 900 Polaroid images by 150 people from around the world. Consider it kind of a backlash against the Polaroid Corporation's decision to stop making instant film this year.

This is a two day event. Last night the turnout was astounding. Come and check it out tonight.

Tonight at Country Club Chicago

OUTDATED Polaroid art show - Chicago tonight [Aug. 16th, 2008|03:58 pm]
The turnout last night was AMAZING! Thank you so much to everyone who showed up for the exhibit last night. I think it's safe to say that everyone had a great time and the whole event has been an overwhelming success.

If you weren't able to come out last night (or if you did and you just want another chance to soak in the 900 astounding Polaroid photographs on display) then come by Country Club Chicago tonight between 7 and 11 pm.

THIS IS THE LAST NIGHT OF THE EXHIBIT!!!!!

If you are in the show, make sure to track me down and say hello. I want to personally thank as many people as possible for making this show what it is.

Photos coming soon! Bring your own camera and help document this event.

Manifestations [Aug. 2nd, 2008|12:04 am]
Plant obsession kicks in fully. Beginning of a larger project. The first real set.

Human + Plant + Silver

Animal / Vegetable / Mineral

I'm figuring out the reasons behind the fascinations. They are tying together finally.

If I've been quiet lately, it's because I've been busy. The response to the OUTDATED Polaroid art show has been amazing.

I'll explain more later. For now, a new photograph.

I am obsessed with plants now. Expect to see evidence of this.

thanks to the kindness of a fellow photographer, I have another box of my dear, discontinued film. I am surprised by people's niceness sometimes. It makes me want to be a better person. Thank you.

taking a print out of the wash - 2008 [Jul. 5th, 2008|06:31 pm]

It seems like I do this once a year. Grab a snapshot of myself taking a print out of the wash.

It's becoming an interesting way of marking time. One thing that hasn't changed is the fact that I still have no idea what to do with my face.

So here's the 2008 version.

new photograph and... video [Jul. 2nd, 2008|11:54 am]

A new photograph from last night

I decided to record an impromptu video of a very particular part of my photographic process that won't exist any longer. Not the taking of photograph, not the printing in the darkroom, but the unveiling of the image. There's something so satisfying about tearing open that paper envelope and seeing an image that did not exist before.

So here I am. A little awkward, unprepared. Trying to talk about something important to me. Seeing the photograph above for the first time. Showing something I do to anyone who might care.
